In London, the biting mosquito species Culex pipiens molestus that occurs in the London underground network, and in underground basements and voids, may actually be a home-grown variety with a remarkable ability to adapt and change to thrive in subterranean environments.London Underground

David Reznick, a biologist at the University of California in Riverside believes that C. pipiens molestus has evolved from local species of Culex pipiens and has not been introduced from abroad.

Reznick believes that ‘finding the molestus mosquito in other countries “shows that the capacity of surface mosquitoes to invade the underground exists elsewhere with the tendency to evolve other species”.
